Fair Lawn NJ 2nd alarm, 15-24 4th St. 06-01-16
Responding Fair Lawn firefighters make gruesome discovery, shortly before midnight on June 1st 2016, a caller alerted Fair Lawn Police that their neighbor's home was on fire, additional calls indicated that the residents may be trapped inside. Upon arrival of the fire chief he reported a heavy smoke condition from the 2 story home and confirmed entrapment on the 2nd floor.
As firefighters stretched lines into the home and initiated searches a deceased male subject was located on the 1st floor with a gunshot wound, during the primary search 2 additional victims were located on the 2nd floor, also deceased with gunshot wounds. Companies also encountered a heavy fire condition on the 2nd floor which extended into the attic and through the roof. The roof was quickly opened up and with 3 hand lines in operation, the main body of fire was knocked down in less than 20 minutes. The fire was declared under control in an hour.
According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, the elderly couple in their 70's who owned the home were killed by their son in his 50's who then killed himself. The actual cause of the fire is still under investigation and 1 firefighter was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
