Newark NJ 3rd alm, 376 Ferry St. 09-11-16
At around 1530 on 9-11-16, Newark NJ Fire Dept started receiving numerous calls for a building fire in the area of Market and Ferry Sts. The 1st due engine and truck responding from their quarters several blocks away on Ferry St. reported heavy smoke in the area. On arrival co's found a large 4 story light weight frame building with a restaurant on the 1st floor and apts above with heavy fire and smoke showing. Co's reported people trapped and numerous rescues were made via ladders as well as through the interior. Based on reports and the visible smoke condition, BC-5 transmitted the 2nd alarm while still enroute. Quickly after arriving on the scene, Deputy 1 transmitted the 3rd alarm and within 20 minutes of the arrival of the 1st co's pulled all members out of the building and set up a collapse zone as heavy fire was now through the roof and showing from all sides of the building on several floors. With the use of numerous hand lines, several deck and ground monitors and 3 ladder pipes all visible fire was knocked down in just over an hour. Co's attempted to re-enter the building but due to the structural stability and the fire starting to escalate once again, all member were again pulled out. The fire was finally placed under control at 1730, several firefighters suffered minor injuries including a possible broken ankle, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
