Yonkers NY 4th alarm, 53 Herriot St. 04-10-16

At just after 14:00 on April 10th, 2016, Yonkers fire co's were dispatched to 53 Herriot St for a structure fire. Upon arrival of 1st due L-71, E-303 and BC-1, heavy smoke was showing from a 3-1/2 story frame with a church on the 1st floor as well as exposure B, a 3 story frame and battalion 1 requested a 2nd alarm. As companies prepared to enter the buildings, heavy fire vented from the front doors of the main fire building. With conditions deteriorating, a 3rd alarm was requested. Due to the heavy fire conditions, companies set up for a defensive attack with 1 tower ladder, 2 ladder pipes and numerous outside lines and were successful in keeping the fire out of exposure D, a 3-1/2 story frame separated by no more than 2 feet. With all companies heavily engaged, a 4th alarm was requested. Eventually the main fire building suffered a major collapse which left only the front wall standing, the B exposure was heavily damaged and the D exposure suffered smoke and water damage. 2 firefighters suffered minor injuries and the fire was placed under control at approximately 17:30.
