1. 2020 Fires

Chestnut Ridge NY, 241 Hungry Hollow Rd 05-31-20

An activated fire alarm led to a multiple alarm fire which heavily damaged a 2 story occupied multiple dwelling in Chestnut Ridge NY. At just before 14:30 on May 31st, 2020 the Monsey NY Fire Dept was dispatched by Rockland County 44 Control for activated fire alarms at 241 Hungry Hollow Rd in the Rudolf Steiner Fellowship Commune. While co's were responding 44 Control advised they were receiving multiple calls for a fire at the location. On arrival of the first chief he reported heavy fire on the 1st and 2nd floors in the rear of the building and requested mutual aid to the scene. Several attack lines were stretched into the building for a very aggressive interior attack as heavy fire broke through the roof. Due to limited hydrants in the complex and the building being set a distance off the main road and uphill the companies encountered water issues. Additional mutual aid from both Rockland County and Bergen County NJ were requested including tankers to supplement the water supply. As the fire continued to spread through-out the building all firefighters were ordered out of the building and a defensive attack was put into operation.
The fire was placed under control in approximately 2 hours however additional mutual aid was requested to provide manpower for relief and overhaul. The building was heavily damaged, no injuries were reported and the origin of the fire is under investigation.
