Passaic NJ 4th alarm, 162-164 Madison St. 10-14-22
A little before 02:00 in the early morning of October 14th 2022, Passaic Fire Dept responded to a reported building fire at Madison St and Hamilton Ave. L-2 arrived and reported a working fire in a large 3 story mixed use building. A 2nd alarm was quickly transmitted as co's reported heavy fire on the 1st floor rear. Several hand lines were put into service as trucks conducted searches and ventilated.
With co's reporting fire on the 2nd floor and running the walls command requested a 3rd alarm and the roof ventilated. Conditions continued to deteriorate with fire now in the cockloft and 3rd floor forcing command to evacuate the building. Ladder pipes and blitz fires were set up and put into operation as fire vented from the roof and as the fire continued to spread horizontally across the cockloft a 4th alarm was transmitted.
A total of 4 aerial streams, several hand lines and blitz fires worked to stop the spread and protect the exposures. Over 60 people were left homeless and the building was destroyed however there were no injuries and the fire was contained to the original fire building.
