Space Shuttle Enterprise Final Flight 04-27-12
NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft N905NA, a 1970 Boeing 747-123 which was originally built for American Airlines and acquired by NASA in 1974, it was extensively modified by Boeing in 1976 for the Space Shuttle program. N905NA is 231'4" long, has a wing span of 195'8" and stands 63'5", it operates with a pilot, co-pilot and a flight engineer, when it is hauling a Shuttle a second flight engineer is added to the crew, it has a range of 1150 miles while transporting a Shuttle.
The Enterprise designated OV-101was the 1st orbiter built by NASA completed in 1976 for use in flight tests and training prior to an actual outer space flight, it was not equipped with heat shielding or engines, although it was originally planned to be modified allowing it to enter space, design changes in subsequent Space Shuttles did not make this feasible. It was also originally named the Constitution but was changed to Enterprise following a major letter writing campaign by Star Trek enthusiast's.
The Enterprise is to be permanently placed on the Intrepid Air and Space Museum in June of 2012.
