Carlstadt NJ 4th alarm, 401 Hackensack St. 06-29-15

On June 29th, 2015 just before 11:30 Carlstadt NJ Fire Dept was operating at a fully involved truck fire on the NJ Turnpike when the dispatcher dropped their tones for a reported structure fire at Bella Pizza on Hackensack St. The 1st arriving unit reported heavy smoke showing from the 2-1/2 story frame building with heavy fire in the rear and a 2nd alarm was requested. With many companies still enroute, a 3rd alarm was sounded with companies advised to stage at Carlstadt Fire Headquarters. An aggressive attack was underway with multiple lines stretched into the building as well as the exposure where units were confirming extension, truck co's went to the roof to open up and with all companies heavily engaged, command requested all 3rd alarm co's to the scene and a 4th alarm for cover. Due to the age of the buildings and years of renovations, fire was found to be running the walls and void spaces of both buildings and from time to time heavy smoke would issue from the upper floors and roof but the companies maintained an aggressive offensive attack, at 12:40 command requested the 4th alarm co's to the scene for relief and a 5th alarm sounded for cover. At just around 13:40 the fire was placed under control and command started releasing some mutual aid companies. Both buildings were heavily damaged and several firefighters were injured with one transported to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.
